Weekend Portfolio: Christos Palios
Project series: Absolute Powers/ex-nihilo
As bedrock concepts representing faith and trust in exchange, money and value have shape-shifted around human desire, behavior and sentiment. Throughout my research, I’ve been drawn to this powerful concept (often discussed, albeit underemphasized) driving societies and psychologies. As we pivot toward cashless societies among evolving consumerist cultures, tenuous socio-economic landscapes, and global expenditure beyond sustainability, the reality of frictionless value is inevitably broadened and abstracted.
In this series, Absolute Powers // ex nihilo, I present a diverse array of historic and contemporary objects and spaces—some common and very relevant, others ambiguous or long-defunct. Each at some point in time was valued by official decree as legal tender and currency in commerce, established as stores of wealth, or epitomized beauty and meaning, ultimately fostering [and losing] immense intrinsic and speculative worth among populations.
