About This Year’s Honorees:

Rem Koolhaas (b. 1944, Rotterdam, Netherlands) founded Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in 1975 together with Elia and Zoe Zenghelis and Madelon Vriesendorp. He graduated from the Architectural Association in London and in 1978 published Delirious New York: A Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan. In 1995, he published S,M,L,XL, a “novel about architecture” that summarized the work of OMA. He coheads the work of both OMA and AMO, the research branch of OMA that operates in areas beyond the realm of architecture. His built work includes the Qatar National Library and the Qatar Foundation Headquarters, Doha (2018); Fondation d’entreprise Galeries Lafayette, Paris (2018); Fondazione Prada, Milan (2018); Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow (2015); the headquarters for China Central Television (CCTV), Beijing (2012); Casa da Musica, Porto (2005); Seattle Central Library (2004); and the Netherlands Embassy, Berlin (2003). Current projects include the Taipei Performing Arts Center, a new building for Axel Springer in Berlin and the Factory in Manchester. Koolhaas directed the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale. He is a professor at Harvard University and is preparing a major exhibition, entitled “Countryside: Future of the World,” to open at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2020.

About New Museum: The New Museum is the only museum in New York City exclusively devoted to contemporary art and is a center for exhibitions, information, and documentation about living artists from around the world. From its beginnings as a one-room office on Hudson Street to the inauguration of its first freestanding building on the Bowery designed by SANAA, the New Museum continues to be a place of experimentation and a hub of new art and new ideas. www.newmuseum.org
