Art Out: La Vie En Rose
Rose Hartman has been a fixture of New York night life for the past four decades. Her ability to gain access to some of Hollywood’s and fashion’s most iconic events propelled her career to the same level of stardom as the subjects in her photographs.
Since these photos have been taken the scene in New York has lost some of its mojo from the glory days. Yet in the Revelation Gallery, a white walled, clean line space in the St. Johns in the Village, that free and wild energy can be felt again.
LA VIE EN ROSE, plays with ideas of both pleasure and infamy in a historical context. A certain joie de vivre, or joy for living, is immediately evident in the work, most of which was shot amidst the decadent landscape of New York City’s nightlife and art world culture of the late 1970s and 1980s—and continuing to early 2000.
