Exhibition Review: Brooklyn Dirty Book Fair with MATTE Magazine
By Liz Von Klemperer
Porn lovers gathered this past weekend for the first ever Brooklyn Dirty Book Fair at Point Green Studio in Greenpoint. The event featured zines and magazines for sale, as well as, a display of queer zines from the collection of Phil Aarons. Artist and MATTE magazine creator Matthew Leifheit organized the event which culminated in an orgy.
“Jesse Stein, a director of Point Green the space, asked me if I'd be interested in curating something there,” Leifheit told Musee. “From there, I came up with the idea of a specifically erotic book fair.” Leifheit called upon friends and artists, ad publishers he admired to create a lineup of smutty art.
The fair featured a host of exciting immerging photographers, including Nicholas Drew, Gabriel Saco, Lindsay Dye, and Rachel Stern, whose images are displayed below.
Leifheit already has high hopes for next year’s Dirty Book Fair. “I want the actual event to be sexier somehow,” he said. “There's a way in which an event branded ‘dirty’ where there's a whole room of erotica is flattening, and nothing actually ends up being that sexy at all. Since it's all sexy, you know? I think next year the fair could be hotter and heavier.”
