New York in July can be full of fun experiences; picnics in the park, music festivals and late night hangs with friends in rooftop bars. But if your summer plans are a bit more adventurous, and involve crossing the pond to the old continent, Musée has compiled six off the beaten path photo festivals you should not miss during your stay.

PhotoIreland Festival 2016 - through July 31

Opening its seventh edition on July 1st, PhotoIreland celebrates the works of emerging international and Irish photographers for one month throughout the vibrant city of Dublin. In an attempt to promote photography in Ireland, the festival welcomes international practitioners and artists and hosts a variety of events in more than forty locations around Dublin. The festival has focused on collaborating with cultural and arts collectives in the city to heighten interest in the medium. This year’s central exhibition, IDEALS, focuses on sociopolitical issues as well as on the photographer’s relation to society.

Antiparos International Photo Festival - July 2-11

With only 1,200 residents, the idyllic Antiparos is the perfect getaway from the crowded beaches of its neighboring Greek islands. This year, Antiparos opens its fourth edition of the international photo festival that aims to promote the island’s cultural identity and enhance the tourist experience in this paradisiac location. The photographers’ nationalities featured this year span from Greece to Norway to Brazil, amongst others.

Les Rencontres d’Arles - July 4-10

This July, the small French town of Arles will receive swarms of photo aficionados to celebrate its 47th edition of the photo festival. Featuring forty exhibitions in unique local venues such as the Chapelle Saint-Martin du Méjan, the festival welcomes the works of renowned photographers Malick Sidibé and Yan Morvan amongst others. The event will also include photography workshops on portrait photography, lighting and reportage.

Athens Photo Festival - through July 31

APhF is one of the largest photography festivals in Southeastern Europe. Taking place at the Benaki Museum in Athens, the festival program includes solo and group exhibitions, workshops, screenings and portfolio reviews throughout its twenty-two day duration.  The theme of its central exhibition “[mis/dis]placed,” is a mesh of poetry and politics as it deals with identity formation in the context of today’s tumultuous socio-political situation.

Cortona On The Move - July 14 - October 2

Tuscany. Enough said. Cortona On the Move takes place on the city center of Cortona in the province of Arezzo, Italy. This year, the festival has collaborated with Magnum Photos and is taking on the theme of “Photography in Travel,” presenting exceptional images of contemporary local and international artists. Workshops will also be available throughout the duration of the festival.
